1998 World Cup Qualifying
After an uneventful Euro 96 qualfying campaign, Ukraine began to build the
foundation for a strong and successful national team with a remarkable World Cup
qualifying campaign, a campaign that almost placed our young nation in the world's most
prestigious football event.
Ukraine's World Cup Qualfying campaign will forever be etched in the hearts and minds of
all Ukrainian football supporters. The campaign was filled with many glorious and
memorable moments. It all started with surprising wins over Northern Ireland and Portugal
and ended with a disastrous and heart-breaking tie after Ukraine deservingly fought to win
the game. Follow the links below to recapture some of the highlights of this long and
incredible journey, a journey that hopefully gave a glimpse of what awaits for Ukrainian
football in the future.
Europe's 49 soccer countries were divided into 9 groups. Four groups contained six teams
and the other five groups contains five teams each. The 9 group winners and the best
runner-up will directly qualify for France '98. The 8 other runners-up will be drawn in 4
pairs and play qualifying home and away matches. The 4 winners will also qualify.

Group 9 Match Results
2nd-Round Playoff
If the two teams are equal on goals after 90' of the 2nd play-off match, the goals scored
away shall count as double. If the two teams are also equal on away goals, extra-time of
twice 15 minutes will be played, applying the golden goal rule. If no goal is scored
during extra-time, penalty kicks will be taken.
